  • Dolphins vs Oconee All Stars (July 15th)

Coach Jonathan's commentary will go here. Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Eastside (July 8th)

The third meet of the summer saw the Dolphins going against their crosstown rivals, the Eastside Sea Turtles. Eastside has a long history with the Dolphins, going back to their powerhouse days in the 1970s. As always, they brought a dedicated group with a lot of team spirit into the meet. The Dolphins, however, proved to be too much for the Sea Turtles, coming out on top in all three categories. The Dolphin girls won 645 to 209, while the Dolphin boys won 779 to 103. All this led to a combined score of Dolphins 1424, Sea Turtles 312.

After the meet, Coach Jonathan said that the Dolphins had learned some good lessons during this competition. With the number of DQs down, it was clear that our swimmers were not only improving in practice, but they had taken to heart the lesson of never underestimating an opponent. He said he saw Dolphin swimmers going out and racing hard, no matter what. He particularly impressed by the example of Daily Diaz, who did flip turns for the first time ever in a meet. More importantly, though, her willingness to step up and do anything necessary when needed as a sub for relays showed her dedication as part of a team. Great job Daily, and Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Summer Hill (June 24th)

The Dolphins second meet of the 2009 season was against one of the perennial powers of Oconee County, the Summer Hill Barracudas. The Barracudas were the only team to defeat the Dolphins last year, and they once again came ready to swim. The Barracudas were well coached and had many more meets under their belt than the Dolphins, but despite the gap in experience, the Dolphins proved themselves up to the challenge, and this year came out on top in all three categories. On the Girls side the final score was Dolphins, 502; Summer Hill, 420; on the Boys side the result was similar: Dolphins 514, Summer Hill 404. All of this led to an overall score of Dolphins, 1016; Summer Hill. 824.

After the meet Coach Jonathan stated that he was once again pleased with the way Dolphin swimmers conducted themselves. He saw evidence of good sportsmanship and the right attitude toward competition all around. In particular, he mentioned the example of Hampton Campbell, whose enthusiasm behind the blocks was felt by all he came into contact with. Hampton encouraged younger swimmers, cheered for older swimmers, and introduced himself to teammates he didn't yet know. His positive attitude was an inspiration to his teammmates, and the team spirit he fostered was one of the things that helped carry the Dolphins over the top. Way to go Hampton, and Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Commerce & Winder (June 10th)

The Dolphins kicked off the 2009 season by swimming a tri-meet against two teams that they had not faced before--the Commerce Tiger Sharks and the Winder Barracudas. These teams provided some stiff competition for the early season, but in the end, the Dolphins proved to be too much and won out on all counts. On the Girls side the score was Dolphins 509, Commerce 217, and Winder 170; on the Boys side the score was Dolphins 533, Winder 284, and Commerce 88; meaning that the overall scores were Dolphins 1042, Winder 454, and Commerce 305.

After the meet Coach Jonathan mentioned that he was very pleased with the show of sportsmanship on the part of the Dolphins and congratulated the team on their efforts. He was particularly impressed with the positive attitude that so many of the Dolphins swimmers throughout the meet. Eight year old Lucy Yeomans, for example, swam an entire race with goggles that had fallen into her mouth during her dive, a show of grit and determination that reminded all her teammates that Dolphins never quit. This is a good thing too, because next on the calendar is an even bigger challenge to the Dolphins as a team, the Summer Hill Barracudas. So work hard, have fun, and we'll see you down at the pool on the 24th. Go Dolphins!
