  • Dolphins vs Jefferson (July 21st)

The Dolphins' final meet of the season was against the Jefferson Sea Dragons. As one might expect from a club coached by ABSC's Matthew Grant, Jefferson came in with a strong roster of highly talented and well trained swimmers. The meet was close for some time, with Jefferson having a particularly strong showing in the 10 & under girls. The meet had to be called because of storms, but not before the Dolphins pulled ahead in all three categories through hard racing by all involved. On the girls side the Athens swimmers outscored Jefferson, 337 to 161, for the boys, the final score was Athens, 352, Jefferson 154.33, all of which resulted in a combined of Athens 688.67 to Jefferson's 315.33. Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins/Eastside vs Oconee All Stars (July 16th)

The Dolphins' fourth meet of the season was against the Oconee County All Star Team. As one might expect, the All Stars presented a formidable challenge, but the Dolphins had help this time from the same competitors they swam against earlier in the week--the Eastside Sea Turtles. With the help of the Sea Turtles, the Dolphins were able to tip the scales against an outstanding team from Oconee County. On the girls side the Athens swimmers outscored Oconee, 451.5 to 425.5, for the boys, the final score was Athens, 522, Oconee 333, all of which resulted in a combined of Athens 973.5 to Oconee's 758.5. Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Eastside (July 14th)

The Dolphins' third meet of the season was against their crosstown rivals, the Eastside Sea Turtles. As this meet matched up the only two swim teams in Clarke County it also counted as the City County Championships. The Dolphins swam to great success, outscoring their opponents in all three areas for the first time this season. The Dolphins girls team overcame the the Eastside girls, 410 to 104, the Dolphins boys topped the Eastside boys, 474 to 45, and the combined totals put the Dolphins ahead in the end 884 to 149. Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Shamrock (June 25th)

The Dolphins' second meet of the season was against the reigning Oconee County Champions, the Shamrock Seals. Shamrock came into the meet with a talented roster and a lot of motivation to swim fast, and their performace in the pool showed it. However the Dolphins rose to the occasion, racing well against against their competitors. The Shamrock girls team edged out the Dolphins girls, 499 to 432, but the Dolphins boys made up the difference by leading Shamrock, 528 to 372. The combined totals were enough to put the Dolphins over the top, and we won the overall competition by a score of 960 to 871.

After the meet Coach Jonathan remarked on how much our swimmers had improved over the past two weeks, not just individually, but as a team. One of the most significant differences in the water was that swimmers were working turns and finishes particularly, and racing to the end. He pointed out that we still need to improve on DQs, but that the number was down from last time, which is an improvement. He emphasized the need for swimmers to remember to do things right in practice, so they are creating good habits for the meet. That said, Coach Jonathan then stated that the most impressive thing he saw was the excellent display of sportsmanship by our Dolphins swimmers. There was lots of cheering for teammates and congratulating opponents on good races. All round our swimmers did the coaching staff proud. Go Dolphins!

  • Dolphins vs Summer Hill (June 4th)

The Dolphins kicked off their season in memorable fashion by swimming one of the toughest teams in Oconee County, the Summer Hill Barracudas. The two teams were fairly evenly matched and both squads swam exceptionally fast for a competition so early in the season. The meet ran just over three hours long, and in the end, Summer Hill won the Girls side, 504 to 438, while the Dolphins won the Boys, 469 to 432. However, the combined totals put Summer Hill ahead with a winning score of 936 to 907.

After the meet Coach Jonathan mentioned that he was very pleased with the show of sportsmanship on the part of the Dolphins and congratulated the team on their efforts. He also pointed out that Summer Hill's victory was by less than 30 points, a fact that illustrates how important every swim is to the success of the team. Or in other words, it's important to remember that when you swim as a team, winning your race isn't all that matters. With a legal swim instead of a DQ here, and a few 6th place finishes there, the result on the 4th could very well have been 30 points the other way. So don't be too disappointed if you don't win your race. Always strive to do your best, but remember that on a team, every point is important and every swim counts. Go Dolphins!
